Hello everyone. I'm Clive and have been a British ABBA fan since 1974, hence my username GamleMan (Old Man), although I'm not really really old The ABBAChat forum is somewhere I visit when I want to find out what fans are saying about ABBA news, such as new songs and releases. From now on, I hope to contribute to the discussions myself.

Greetings! My earliest memories of ABBA's songs go back to 1976, S.O.S. was played on the AM station in town and I can slightly recall a K-TEL commercial with S.O.S. being played during the spot as well. What really got the ball rolling was my parents gave me ARRIVAL as a Valentine's Day gift in '77. "Dancing Queen" was climbing up the charts and The Movie Channel kept airing Studio 2 in Poland.
I am extremely looking forward to hearing the group's completed new work, even if it's just two, three, or say five songs. Rock on!

Dear all I am Charly from Switzerland. I was born 1963 and ABBA fan since Brighton 1974. I got my first ABBA single in 1975, it was S.O.S. So really fanatic I have been when they broadcasted the TV show "Musikladen Extra" and afterwards ABBA released the "Very Best Of" Double Album. Looking forward to discussing all sorts of topics ....

Greetings from Las Vegas, Nevada USA.
I am a lifelong rock/pop/country western music fan. I really enjoy a variety of music. I was born in 1950 and from the mid to late 60's and all of the 70's I was really tuned in to what was going on in music that I was exposed to on the radio. I bought lots of vinyl and I saw lots of live acts that toured the USA. Somehow in all of that I missed out on ABBA. They didn't get the radio play they deserved in America and they didn't tour much here. The only thing I recalled about ABBA from my past was they were Swedish and they were fronted by two beautiful female singers. I didn't know they were two couples. I could identify a few of the better charting ABBA songs. September 2020 I watched ABBA The Movie on the Turner Classic Movie channel and I was blown away. The girls singing was on point and the band was outstanding.
After that I did a deep dive on the internet to learn about ABBA. I was amazed how big they were in Europe and Australia. I bought a copy of the greatest hits CD, turned up the volume, and listened to ABBA for the first on a good sound system. I loved it. I ordered the boxed set that had all eight albums and listened, in order, from Ring Ring to Visitors. Good stuff! I have read Carl Magnus Palm's book Bright Lights Dark Shadows. I feel like I am now somewhat up to speed on basic ABBA history. I have been following ABBAchat for a few months and decided to register.
I really liked the Visitors album (except for Two For The Price Of One) and liked the direction ABBA was headed. Too bad that was the end. I am looking forward to the new material. I have no idea what to expect but I think it will be good. My username is a salute to the Abba Seafood Company. I think it is funny that ABBA the band had to get permission to use the ABBA name from a company that produces fishballs. There you have it.

yes welcome abbafishballs. fishballs are a common street food item where i come from. yummy!
i can identify with your experience getting hold of all the albums the first time and listening to them one by one and getting blown away. that was what happened to me in a way. i got on the bandwagon just before they released the visitors. I remember buying all their albums (in cassette tapes) after buying greatest hits vol 2 and then 1. i just loved all their songs.

Thanks to HOMETIME and tagaytay for the welcome. I am beginning to search international markets here in Las Vegas for Abba fish balls. Maybe I will get to taste them in the near future. I am learning many new things on ABBAchat. My best to all for the future.

My name is Martin and I am an Abba-Fan since 1979, since I heard Gimme, Gimme, Gimme for the first time as an 8 year old. I heard a lot of music in different styles since that time and became a composer and musician, working in my own studio in Germany/Cologne for several customers. My fandom had a mighty comeback in the early 2000s and since then I was thinking about combining my profession as a composer and producer with my Knowledge about and adoration for ABBA. As I attended the opening of Abba theMuseum in Stockholm in May 2013, I had some minutes with Frida, and couldn't hardly talk with her, because the inner 8 year old, was so shocked to see her as a real person. However, she was very nice to me and signed my Super-Trouper Notebook. I even saw Benny and Björn running around. The opening ceremony and this fantastic museum gave me a big kick of inspiration. When I returned home, i immediately began to compose a bundle of new songs. And this songs became my own project called Groenalund, like the beautiful quarter of Stockholm, where i got hit by this energy wave of inspiration. I had to build my studio first around this idea, because I wanted to achieve that classic wall of sound, you can hear on the records of the 70ies and early 80ies. So I needed special instruments and microphones and had to do some research, how to come close to this sound in the 21st century. One thing was for sure, I wanted to record with original instruments only, no modern sampling Libraries would be allowed and no drum computers, just real musicians and real instruments. This way of producing is somehow out of fashion, because it needs a lot of time and Know How, to do it well. I found some articles and interviews with Mike Tretow, looked closely at the studio photos of Abbas recording sessions and began to produce. The first results wer disappointing. Off course. But giving up was not an opportunity... And now, 8 years later, the studio is ready for a fat classic sound, 11 songs are written and nearly recorded completely, and I worked with a lot of musicians all over the world. One highlight was last year, when I returned to Stockholm again and recorded some guitar Tracks with Janne Schaffer and his golden Les Paul. You can hear him playing this famous guitar in several Abba-Recordings, like Dancing Queen, Super Trouper etc. he attended 50 classic Abba-Tracks. I had 2 fantastic studio days with him and heard a lot of heartwarming stories about his time with Abba. "Eagle" was always one of my favourite tracks, and now I worked with the man, who printed his unique guitar sound as an essential ingredient to this track. Someone had to pinch me. The other day I was in Benny Anderssons studio, to record with his mighty GX1, the synthesizer, you hear on the ABBA-Albums from Voulez-Vous on. And I recorded on his Grand Piano for our ballad "forgiven". i was completely exhausted after this intensive days, but i had some nice recordings with me, that now are all integrated in the new Groenalund-Songs. I was shocked in 2018, when I heard about the new Abba-songs. I was sure, they would never produce new songs. Perhaps I never would have started my band, if i knew that earlier. But now I am in the unpleasant situation to have my Album ready in December this year, when Abba announced to bring out their new songs. Lets hope, my band will look not to small beside the giant role model. We even recorded one Cover-version of "Just like that", to show our deep respect to Abba. This version is as close to the original in our interpretation, as we can get. It will be released in late Summer I think. Im happy, to share my Abba-stories here and would feel very happy, if some people here give our music a chance. Our music is very Abba-influenced, but never steals obviously and has some other references too. im looking forward meeting all of you here in the forum, Martin

Hey everyone!
Greetings from France!
My name is Kevin and I'm 31 years old.
I became an ABBA fan in 2002 thanks to a French TV talent show called "Star Academy" which released a cover of ABBA's "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!". I instantly fell in love with it, bought the single, and when my parents told me the original version was sung by ABBA I started looking for their records. There was no Youtube nor internet at home back then so basically, I went to the music store, found "The Definitive Collection" compilation, and decided I would ask it as a give for my next birthday... Which was 9 months or so later! So I waited for those 9 months, frequently checking whether the CD was still available in store, listening to the Star Academy version on repeat, and getting ecstatic each time I heard the ABBA version somewhere... I didn't know any other ABBA song except for Waterloo, which I had heard a few times in the past without knowing who sang it. And I also remember mistaking "Dancing Queen" for Boney M's "Daddy Cool" when I saw the song title on the back cover of The Definitive Collection haha
Then the day finally came! I got "The Definitive Collection" as a present for my 13th birthday, at last! I remember going to my bedroom and I played "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" and "Waterloo" on repeat with my sisters haha And the following day I listened to the whole compilation. I wouldn't say I was instantly caught by the songs, but only because that was so much novelty to take in at the same time! Once I digested all of it I properly fell for a few other songs. And then a few more. And then a few more. And then a few more. And I ended up loving the entire compilation so much that I decided to get all the ABBA albums, which happened over the course of a few years - again through birthday and Christmas gifts! I also asked for DVDs, and later, books... And since I've started using my defunt grandpa's turntable, I've also been collecting second-hand original ABBA LPs and singles, so as hear the sound as close as ABBA wanted it to be back then as possible. I just never get tired of them and hearing their music on vinyl made me love them even more - if that's possible. They're also the ones who started my passion for 70's disco music! (although I later realised ABBA was not a disco group but a proper pop group who could also make disco masterpieces!)
But that's not all! I'm an English teacher now - starting officially as a full time English teacher next week actually - and I must say ABBA played a big part in that. When I became a fan I was so passionate that I wanted to know everything about them, so first, I read the booklet featured in "The Definitive Collection". And, with each studio album I got on CD I read the stories featured in the booklet and learned the lyrics to the songs. And each time I didn't understand a word, I looked it up in my little French-English dictionary and learned it almost instantly. And reading all the information about their songs and their history as a group in English helped me learn "authentic" English (not the one taught in French schools haha). I already loved English before discovering ABBA, and it was definitely my favourite school subject... But I can definitely say that ABBA took it to a whole different level.
I will forever be grateful for everything this group has brought me! I owe them so much! When I was a teenager I wanted them to make a comeback so bad... It was probably one of my biggest dreams back then. I got really hopeful everytime I heard a rumour about a supposed comeback. But then I realised it was never going to happen, and came to terms with that. So with the announcement of the ABBAtars and the new songs in 2018... And now this... I'm just over the moon, it's a real childhood dream coming true, unexpectedly! ABBA are coming to save 2021 and I think we can all agree on one fact: it's much needed!!

I agree, that is a great story, Kevin. I am always interested in how people got into ABBA and your story is especially interesting, being from this century. I tend to assume that people getting into ABBA nowadays come via the Mamma Mia route. I was around the same age as you were when I became an ABBA fan, albeit 29 years earlier. When you were becoming an ABBA fan, I was living in France and was an avid viewer of Star Academy. I bought their single of "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" (I think it made No 1 in France), but only because it was an ABBA song - to be honest, I didn't think much of their version (but no version is going to compare favourably against the original). If I had known you were so desperate for an ABBA CD back then, I would have sent you one What do you think of the French version of "Waterloo"? Do you ever listen to it? Your written English is impeccable, so I'm not surprised you're an English teacher. Are you sure you're not British, especially with a name like Kevin?
