Abba have just received a brits nomination for best international group. Ceremony in February 2022. Great news - thanks for posting. The more critical acclaim they receive for Voyage, the greater the chance of further new stuff, however small that chance might be!

Not sure if this is widely known but, apparently, Don't Shut Me Down was Abba's first #1 single in Sweden since Summer Night City! Odd how the #1s kept coming elsewhere in the world after SNC but not in their own country. 4 #1's Ring Ring Swedish version Dancing Queen Summer Night City Don't Shut Me Down Up until 1975 album + single charts combined. Ring Ring LP kept of #1 by Ring Ring single. Waterloo Swedish version at #2 while Waterloo LP #1. ABBA didn't release that many singles. #2 Waterloo - Swedish Fernando The Name of the Game Chiquitita The Winner Takes it All

Just as a thought..
Has anyone started to listen to Voyage mixed with other older tracks, segmented them as such... how does it feel ? Or like myself still stuck with listening to the album in its entirety, without mixing ...
What works what doesn't... ?

Just as a thought.. Has anyone started to listen to Voyage mixed with other older tracks, segmented them as such... how does it feel ? Or like myself still stuck with listening to the album in its entirety, without mixing ... What works what doesn't... ? I play lots of music to my budgie, among the artists I play him are Roxette (his favorite haha) and ABBA, and the moment I got the Voyage tracks on CD, I threw them into his playlist which I keep on shuffle, and it's been nice hearing the new songs pop up every once in a while. So far the only song that sounds sort of out of place amongst the older ABBA songs is Ode to Freedom, (I like the song btw, not complaining!) otherwise in my opinion, they all seem to sound pretty good. Like there's no question that they're ABBA songs when played alongside the old songs.
Also I had wanted to share my thoughts on the album here, but I really don't have much to say other than I honestly love all the new songs. Each song is catchy in it's own way, even the slower songs, and are constantly getting stuck in my head. I will admit, it took me a few listens to get used to the album, but now I love it.

I've just read 'Journalist' Roger Friedman's latest attempt, to say that ABBA's 'Return' has been a complete failure. He has used the same tactics at least twice before, in the last few Months. He is determined to convince the World, that ABBA's 'Return' was a huge mistake. A 100% disaster. He condemns the 2021 Singles, the 'Voyage' Album, The ABBAtars... He seems totally unaware that 'Old' Acts cannot get enough Streams, to have huge Singles. It is nothing to do with those Acts no longer being popular. As in the UK, 'Old' Acts can only have USA Top 10 Singles, via Streams at 'Christmas', or by Teaming up with 'Modern' Acts - as Elton John does. If he hates ABBA so much, you'd think that he'd avoid doing Articles about them. But, he seems to need to express his hatred - over and over. He writes for the Showbiz 411 Site. He is an American. The Site is American. He uses American iTunes, to 'Prove' that no-one likes ABBA any more. In fact, they were never huge there, anyhow. He could just as easily used the USA Singles and Albums Charts, to 'Prove' that ABBA were not very popular - Globally - in 1976!
(Yes, 'Voyage' is no longer in the USA iTunes Top 200, but it is in the iTunes Top 100, (mainly Top 40), of 34 other Countries. He does not mention that...) BELOW -- LINK TO HIS LATEST ANTI ABBA 'ARGUMENTS'

Well, I am not going to click on that link and give him a 'hit'. I think some people focus on what is happening in their own country and consider their own country to be the most important. I dare say this effect is more pronounced with Americans, especially given that the US has been traditionally seen as such an important market, in addition to the UK. These countries have been perceived as market leaders. But as you say, ABBA's worldwide success has never hinged on the US.

His focus on the iTunes chart is disingenuous - but, as he clearly has an axe to grind, it's no real surprise.
I heard from an industry insider last year that the iTunes store is performing so poorly that it might be closed soon. As someone who releases music through iTunes, I can tell you that the numbers required to enter the charts are astonishingly low (I've gone Top 5 in the Irish iTunes chart with my first three singles and the download numbers are nothing short of embarrassing). So it's hardly a reliable barometer of success or failure.
As you've noted yourself, Colin, he ignores that heritage acts just don't do numbers on streaming. He completely ignores the phenomenal vinyl sales and that the CD sales seemed to turn back time. The album's continued success in the global album charts, as well as the UK and German charts - both huge markets - makes a mockery of his chin-stroking. What kind of music journalist can have such a poor understanding of the industry and expect to be taken seriously? Is this what passes for analysis these days? He reads like a contrarian, passes his opinions as a facts. I'm only annoyed that I clicked on that tripe. If we regard his views as worthy of future consideration, maybe someone should take one for the team and screenshot the bile so that nobody else need give him the desired clicks.
If Voyage is a failure, how does he measure the fate of albums that have sold less? The articles should be "interesting."

Thanks Colin for your post. Let's not pay any attention to one " jumped up " critic who to seems gleeful to pour scorn over ABBA. We all know that he is wrong and I hope ABBA sue him for his rude comments. Unfortunately, there will always be one.

Oh God... Get a load of that... Roger Friedman; what a dumbass he is - he's been slamming acts like Madonna with ageist stuffs to excuse his hating which was enough for me to consider him nothing more than just a small pest rather than an elephant in the room. I did read his preceding articles some months ago and it just reeks of ignorance. I have been avoiding the temptation to include this in the Voyage official review thread, given his narrow methodology limiting it to American sources. Rest assured, as an American (mind you...), he does not speak for the population of the U.S., and neither do I. He makes Robert Christgau look like a saint.

No idea who that guy is.
He clearly thinks only in terms of the US.
Itune charts mean little these days and not important for an act like ABBA that sell physical albums - 90% of Voyage's sales are outside the US. He thinks America is 100% the world.

Who cares what he thinks. Never heard of him. Strange that. The USA has a small population compared to the rest of the world. He needs to look beyond his country's borders and not be so dismissive of other countrys' charts. 9 billion people on the planet and he is only interested in the musical charts of a country with a population of 350 million people. Says it all. Abba known the world over. He known by who, where and how many? I think we all know the answer to that.

Yeah, I saw the cute clip on Instragram (and now Facebook). Far better to focus on that than some little nobody who has hate in their bones. I don't even see the point in posting a link to it. I certainly won't be clicking on it. Why on earth would I want to give the loser a hit.

Absolutely beautiful. Thanks Tony. This has brightened up my day. It is wonderful that after all these years ABBA are finally nominated for a Brit Award. Thanks to Justabba for posting the thread.

ABBA's Brit Award Nomination is their 2nd Nomination. They also got one at the very 1st Brits, in 1977. They were called The Britannia Awards, at that time. The 1977 Awards were for all of UK Chart History. ABBA's 'Arrival' was up for Best International Pop Album. Their rivals were: 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', by Simon and Garfunkel. (1970). 'Tapestry' by Carole King. (1971). Finally - 'Songs In The Key of Life', by Stevie Wonder. (1976). The Simon and Garfunkel Album Won.
The Awards then vanished, only to start again in 1982. Those Awards were for 1981 Singles and Albums. However, ABBA were not Nominated for anything. Then they split up, and were unable to qualify for any further Awards - until now...
NOTE -- As it is only ABBA's 2nd Brits Nomination since 1977, a lot of Fans think that them merely being Nominated for Best International Group, is under-rating them. It really should have been a Special Award -- the 'Lifetime Achievement Award'. Only the really biggest, (Long Term), Artists have ever had it. ABBA really should have been Nominated for that. They are much more than just an International Group, for 2021.

The category of Best International Group doesn't have much prestige. The biggest acts are solo and/or British. ABBA are in a second division category.
LifeTime Achievements are seen as Consolation for acts who never one a regular prize.
The Grammy nomination is different. Record of the Year is arguably THE award to win - with Song of the Year and Album of the Year also up there. They are open to all acts regardless of nationality or group/solo artist status.
The Hall of Fame has more prestige I would argue than any consolation prize. It is awarded on basis of merit and open to acts who have won many awards or indeed none.
The BRITs are just not that important

Looks like Voyage is guaranteed another top 3 position in the UK this week. It's currently (Wednesday) on 19,000 sales with Sheeran on 28,000 and Adkins on 46,000.

Bjorn has just been on the UKs Lorraine show, to be honest just a little catch up, nothing new , asked about his favourite Abba track , which when pinned down was TWTIA.no surprise... Talked about the Grammys , Abbatars, and alas another confirmation that Voyage is probably the last album, even though loads of critical acclaim and fans wanting more.. I'm still sure that they will have something up their sleeves..perhaps no album but a single or two......
Its going very quiet on here, naturally for time of year...
So for those that celebrate Christmas I wish you a Merry one and thank you all for contributions to this forum, its great to read our thoughts... For those who dont celebrate I also thank you and wish you well.
HAPPY NEW year to one and all and here's to a happy and healthy 2022... ah.. also more ABBA please.....
Graham.

You'd image album of the year would be the one with all the prestige.

The way I understand it, Record of the Year goes to the performers and producers of a song. Song of the Year goes to the songwriter. The album of the year is, indeed, the grand dame of Grammys, although there are separate best album categories within each genre.

Johnny -- Lots of hugely popular Acts have been given the lifetime Achievement Award at The Brits. Artists who had also Won several other Brits Awards. The Award has also been called the Outstanding Contribution To Music Award. ABBA were given a Token Brits Award in 1999, but, I still am not sure what it was called! It was not for the Lifetime Achievement Award, or the Outstanding Contribution to Music Award, as The Eurythmics got it in 1999. Many People feel that it is time that ABBA were given a Brit Award for all of their UK success, over the Years. The same for Kylie Minogue, who has been having UK No.1 Albums since 1988. I guess you may say Album of the Year is the top prize in the grammys.
But Record of the Year (for a track/single/song) must outstrip Song of the Year. As pointed out Record is awarded to the Artist etc. The Song to just the songwriters.
LifeTime Achievement in more recent years has gone to artists who were not "current" for that year. ABBA are current. Such an award can wait. I don't think any artist has won a main BRIT and Special Award the same year. In that sense it is a consolation. But I am sure I will be corrected if wrong.
The Grammy nomination has more prestige than the BRIT award ABBA are up for - or indeed any BRIT award. The Hall of Fame (I know not Grammy) has more prestige than any BRIT lifetime award. In International section, used to have Best Album - not now. They have Best International Single but like its British counterpart based on sales so no ISHFIY or DSMD.
Have you got the impression I am not impressed with the BRITS?
On other Voyage news - and this is a Voyage thread, the album has gone double platinum in Sweden. That is 60,000 sales.

I’m not normally the chart positions reporter, but Voyage spends its third consecutive week at number 3 in the UK Christmas charts announced today. Its weekly positions so far are 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 3, 3. Extremely impressive.
Little Things has exited the singles chart, and as Christmas effectively ends tomorrow, it’s unlikely to return. Its two weeks on the chart were 61 and 73. Although Just A Notion peaked higher (number 59) it spent just the one week on the chart. When You Danced With Me also only had the one week, peaking at 67 (though no physical release - I wonder how it might have done if it had?)

Not sure if reported elsewhere but album sold another 125,000 worldwide last week and is now #6 in the global album chart. Total sales just under 1.25 million. www.mediatraffic.de/albums.htmA new week's data from the global chart just out. Voyage stays at #6 with a further 115,000 sales now totalling 1,363,000. The total is still just ahead of Sheeran but some way behind Adkins. www.mediatraffic.de/albums.htmA slight sales increase on the global chart this week to 116,000 making 1,479,000 in total, so almost 1.5 million. It does, however, slip one place to #7. Adkins still at 1, Sheeran at 4. Merry Christmas to all!

It upsets me to realise that ABBA's new songs are only bringing interest to ABBA fans instead of non ABBA fans I really wanted 'Little Things' to be UK Christmas Number 1 as its such a fabulous song and really captures the true spirit of Christmas instead the UK are lumbered with the god awful Ladbaby for the 4th consecutive year how an absolutely rubbish song can be liked and even reach Number 1 makes me wonder why the UK public are so attracted to such awful music and allow excellent songs to completely go unnoticed.

To be fair, the Ladbaby singles are for charity. I can’t imagine anyone thinks they are great songs! I wish I could agree with you about Little Things, but it’s my least favourite song on Voyage and among their worst songs. I’m afraid I quite like the Elton John/Ed Sheeran song, even if it is the son of Don’t Go Breaking My Heart! Happy Christmas everyone!

Had they not taken the two biggest current acts on the planet on they would be enjoying their 6th week at number one. I still think they should have waited until next year. Adele made sure that other acts had lost momentum before releasing her album. She was not going to take any chances of being knocked off number one even for one week. Her album is the worst she has released. Running out of ideas I think.
